Basic information about Oregon’s delegate selection plan

Oregon’s presidential primary is May 20, 2008
The filing deadline to run for any delegate position is May 22, 2008
The national convention is Aug. 25-28, 2008, in Denver, CO

Oregon Democrats will elect 66 delegates and nine alternates
Our state will have six more delegates and one more alternate than in 2004.

The number of delegates each presidential candidate gets will be determined by the results of the presidential primary in the congressional districts and statewide.

To be a delegate to the one of the congressional district conventions, you must meet eligibility requirements and file the filing form by the May 22 deadline. To be a delegate to the state convention, you must be eligible, file the form on time, and elected by your congressional district convention. To be a delegate or alternate to the national convention, you must be eligible, file the form on time, and be elected either at the congressional district or state conventions.

34 delegates and 5 alternates will be elected at congressional district conventions on June 7, 2008
First District: 7 delegates
Second District: 5 delegates
Third District: 9 delegates
Fourth District: 7 delegates
Fifth District: 6 delegates
Each district will elect one alternate.

19 delegates and four alternates will be elected at the state convention on June 21, 2008
12 delegates and four alternates will be elected at-large
Six delegates will be elected as Party Leader/Elected Official (PLEO) delegates
One will be elected as an “unpledged add-on” delegate

13 delegates are automatic, unpledged, delegates (the "Superdelegates"). They include:
Our Governor, U.S. Senator, and four members of the U.S. House
Our seven elected and appointed members of the Democratic National Committee.

The delegation must be balanced by gender

With the guidance of the DNC, the DPO has established “representation goals” designed to make sure the delegation reflects the makeup of Oregon’s Democratic electorate.
Those goals are:
African American, 2
Asian/Pacific Islander American 3
Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender 5
Hispanic American/Latino 7
Native American 1

Delegates to the state convention on June 21, 2008
Each congressional district convention will elect delegates to the state convention, which will elect the rest of Oregon’s delegation to the national convention. The delegates will reflect the results of the presidential primary in their district.
The districts will elect:
First District 62 state delegates
Second District 45 state delegates
Third District 76 state delegates
Fourth District 61 state delegates
Fifth District 56 state delegates

There are no alternates to the state convention.
